"Recycling Changes Everything"
A one hour interactive presentation for your school
The Compost Club delivers a one hour presentation to increase awareness of the composition of trash. We help you raise student motivation and determine if a school-wide compost system is appropriate at your school site.
The presentation cost is $75
A few statistics highlight the logic of our work:
-
California Integrated Waste Management Board estimates that 41% of commercial trash is recyclable or compostable materials.
-
Food scraps are the largest single category of waste sent to the landfill by weight; Sonoma County sends 4,000 tons of it per month to the landfill; only 3% of it is recycled across the nation.
-
The Sonoma County Landfill closed August 31, 2005 due to contamination and capacity issues. Since then, 1,300 tons of waste are trucked each business day to five bay area counties. None of those landfills capture and convert the methane to a biogas, resulting in methane emission to the atmosphere.
About our participating schools:
The Compost Club starts each school with a vermiculture system sized to handle food waste for the entire school. Schools like Apple Blossom report a 50% reduction in trash service needs.
- Schools initiate the program with a four bin rotational system.
- Bins are assembled by students .
- A lead teacher directs students to manage the daily feeding and care for the worms.
- Compost is harvested in spring and fall.
- Compost is either used on campus, or sold as a fundraiser to help pay for class field trips.
- After a few years, we help you determine if a high effiiciency compost vessel is appropriate for your site.
